Plea made to help animal shelter (09/30/2008)

To the editor:

The Jay County Humane Society has initiated an SOS campaign to "Save our Shelter." The funds on hand for daily operating expenses of the shelter are quickly depleting and there is a real possibility of the shelter closing. For many years the shelter has been a refuges for homeless, abused and neglected animals of Jay County, and countless animals have been saved due to the hard work of the shelter staff.

Many of you have adopted one or more of those rescued animals, so you know what a joy these pets have brought to your family. With the issuing of the SOS, the Jay County Humane Society is hoping that we residents will step up and help save the shelter.

We, the associates at the Mars Petcare plant in Portland, are stepping up by starting an in-plant campaign to raise money to donate to the "Save Our Shelter" fund.

And we are issuing a plea to the associates of other industries in Jay County to start their own SOS fund-raising campaign.

By working together in this effort we can ensure that the shelter will remain open to care for the homeless animals of our area.

This letter is to publicly say thank you to Sue Myers for her great Pumpkin Fest she puts on every year. You and your family and helpers do a lot of work to put this on.

The petting zoo and free hay rides are great.

It is so nice to be able to drive just a few miles, not have to pay admission or pay to park, and to have such a great time.

You keep getting bigger and bigger every year, yet you manage to keep your prices very affordable.

I know I look forward to the Pumpkin Fest every year and I admire you and thank you for doing such a great job.

I don't know who has more fun: The little kids or the big "kids." I just know you bring a smile to us all.
