Plenty to do this fall weekend (10/04/2008)
Editorial
Busy, busy, busy.
This has shaped up as one of the most crowded weekends on the local calendar. Anyone who says there's nothing to do hasn't been paying attention.
Today and Saturday the headlining event is the Jay County Historical Society's Heritage Festival, which has grown into one of the most enjoyable gatherings of the year. It's fun, it's easy on the budget, and it's educational.
This year's event also has the added treat of honoring longtime Lawrence Welk Show entertainer Jack Imel, who has always proudly called Portland his hometown. Jack will be reminiscing both this afternoon and again on Sunday.
Several blocks west on Main Street, down around the Jay County Courthouse, the Arch Bridge Kroozers will be holding one of their popular cruise-ins late this afternoon and evening. It's a great place to run into old friends on an early fall Saturday.
But that's just the start of the list of what's going on.
In Dunkirk, the Main Street U.S.A. Festival will be taking place at West Jay Middle School's gymnasium from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.
And if you're feeling civic-minded, Sheriff Ray Newton and his staff are offering informational tours at the Jay County Jail as part of a public-education effort in advance of the November referendum on jail expansion. Those tours will be offered from noon to 3 p.m. today and again on Sunday.
As if that were not enough, Jay County Democrats will hold their Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner tonight with gubernatorial candidate Jill Long Thompson billed as the featured speaker.
On Sunday, the activity continues, this time with the annual engine show gathering at the Limberlost State Memorial in Geneva, another great way to spend an afternoon.
For a single fall weekend, this one couldn't get much fuller. - J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
