Plow drivers praised (2/13/04)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

I was reading Friday night’s (Feb. 6) paper about the county workers.

I totally agree with both Teresa and Shelly. Those guys do a great job, working long hours with many sleepless nights.

But there’s a group of men we seem to forget about and forget to praise them for their hard work. I’m talking about Indiana Department of Transportation highway workers.

These guys are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. That means Christmas eve and Christmas day if it needs to be done.

While we are in our nice, warm beds, these guys have been out four or five hours getting the roads ready so we can go to work safely.

These men that work for the state of Indiana are local — your friend, neighbor, brother or husband.

Mine is a husband. I’m very proud of him. He puts a lot of hours in. Sometimes I don’t know how he keeps going.

This last storm we had, he and his crew worked 12 to 14 hours a day until the storm broke to keep the main roads open.

All I’m asking is to show some respect for these men, too. Give a friendly wave instead of a fist or a hand gesture.

You never know, the next time you’re in a ditch, it might be a state highway worker in a plow truck that pulls you out.

You do a great job, guys.

Thank you.
