PMM to provide ER service (10/20/04)
Hospital board picks new provider
Preferred Medical Management Inc. of Portland will again be providing emergency room services to Jay County Hospital starting in December.
In a four to one vote, the Jay County Hospital Board voted Tuesday to approve a three-year contract with the company. PMM will begin providing the services on Friday, Dec. 3. The current agreement with Northern Indiana Emergency Physicians LLP ends just before midnight on Thursday, Dec. 2.
Before the board made its decision, JCH chief executive officer Joe Johnston said the hospital will pay PMM about $33,317 per month for services. NIEP is currently paid about $25,000 per month.
Johnston said PMM was selected over five other firms that also submitted proposals for the service because its bid was one of the lowest received. He added all the submitted bids exceeded the amount currently paid to NIEP.
PMM is owned by Dr. Stephen Myron, who also serves as Jay County’s health officer.
Under the terms of the new contract, PMM will provide a medical director and staff. Johnston said there will be three full-time employees and several part-time employees in the emergency room. Services will be provided seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
None of the board members commented on the proposed contract before the votes were cast. Board member Randy Heston cast the lone dissenting vote.
He said he voted against the agreement because he disagrees with some of PMM’s past practices which have not changed.
NIEP began providing emergency room service to the hospital in July 2003. Before that, PMM provided the ER service for nearly 20 years.[[In-content Ad]]
