Portland pool revenue up (9/7/05)
By By Rachelle Haughn-
The hot spot for kids this summer earned the city about $3,000 more than it did in the summer of 2004.
Members of the Portland Park Board learned Tuesday night that $21,194 was collected at Portland Pool between May 28 and Aug. 28. Last summer, the pool’s revenue was only $18,299.
The pool’s concession stand also brought in about $4,700, which is double the revenue of last year, pool manager Jennifer Snow said. Concession stand sales probably increased this year because more food items, including ice cream, were for sale at the pool, she said.
The city paid $23,512 in wages to pool employees this summer, street and park department superintendent Jeff Harker said. Also, operating expenses for the pool, which includes supplies, chemicals and utilities, was only $11,901, compared to about $15,000 last summer.
Harker said this morning operating expenses were higher last year because he purchased extra chemicals for the pool. He didn’t have to purchase any chemicals this year because he had some left over from last year.
Harker said attendance at the pool this summer was probably higher because of the extended hot weather.
In other business, Harker told the board the former hatchery building on South Wayne Street has been demolished.
The razing work, which is being done by SBI, Shroyer Brothers Inc. of Muncie, began on Aug. 23 and is expected to take a total of 20 days to complete.
Harker said there is still some debris left to haul away from the site, and the foundation needs to be dug up.
The building site is set to be the entrance to the planned Hudson Family Park.[[In-content Ad]]
