Position of local group is clarified
To the editor:
There has been much publicity and controversy over confined feeding operations that are impacting our community. I am also aware of the strong opinion of the Humane Society of the United States and PETA. I want to clarify that the "voice" of the Jay County Humane Society is for pet animals. We do not take a stand on agricultural issues, nor do we have any affiliation or financial connection with these organizations.
In the past few years, the term "pet animals" has come to include horses. We are receiving more complaints of horses with inadequate nutrition or shelter. These complaints are investigated, and our intent, as with all complaints, is to educate and assist the owners in providing a more suitable situation for the animal.
The intent of this letter is to make certain that the residents of Jay County and surrounding communities know that the Jay County Humane Society Inc. operates solely on donations and fundraisers and does not receive financial assistance from any national organization. Our organization is very appreciative and thankful for the ability to work with our farming community.
If you have questions or would like to support your local animal shelter, contact the humane society at (260) 726-6339.
Thank you,
Cheryl Miller, treasurer
Jay County Humane
Society

The Dunkirk Improvement Committee hosted a fund-raiser May 2 for funds to improve and revitalize Dunkirk. We would like to thank all the individuals and organizations that helped make this possible.
Through the continued support of the public and local businesses, we have been able to provide directional signs to Dunkirk, place specialized park benches in our town, and create the first-ever Dunkirk calendar.
We are continuing to strive to improve our town and wish to thank the following for recent donations:
Bonnie Alexander; Barnum-Brown Insurance; Lauren Bradshaw; Tom Brosher; Pam Bunch; Candy Griffith and Lancaster Bingo Supplies; City of Dunkirk; Clemmons Properties LLC; Comcast Inc./Kathy Greene; Crossroads Financial Federal Credit Union; DCS Computer Sales and Service; Dunkirk Flowers and Gifts; Dunkirk Pantry/Marathon; Dunkirk Volunteer Firemen's Bingo; E&T Tree Service; Family Dollar (Dunkirk); Tony and Ailesia Franklin; The Glass Museum; Gary's Car Wash; Gloria Hamilton; Heather Clemmons; Hughes Pik-A-Pak; Jay County Democrat Central Committee; Jay County Democrat Women; Jay County Pawnbrokers; Jay County REMC; Jay County Solid Waste Management District; Marsh Hometown Market (Portland); McEwen Border Collies; Miller's Merry Manor; Minar's IGA (Albany); Pak-A-Sak/Subway (Dunkirk); SDP Manufacturing Inc.; Shelly's Beauty Shop; Shields Garage; Tyson Mexican Original (Portland); Wal-Mart (Portland); West Jay Community Center; and Wilson Heating and Cooling.
Once again, many thanks to all of you for helping make this event a huge success. The Dunkirk Improvement Committee meets the first and third Wednesday of each month at Dunkirk City Hall, 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

The Jay County Humane Society would like to thank all those who made the bake sale April 24 a success.
Thank you to the following:
Ken Schwieterman for allowing us to hold the sale at True Value and for your continued support.
P.J. Corwin and the students who passed out fliers advertising our sale.
The businesses that allowed fliers to be posted.
To the board members, staff, volunteers and friends and family for furnishing the baked goods and candies.
The variety and amount was amazing.
To those who stopped to purchase something and support the shelter. Proceeds from the sale went directly to the shelter.
And to my husband. Little did he know that when I started volunteering at the shelter it also meant that he became a volunteer too. He really went the extra mile for me when he built an electric can crusher to make crushing the donated cans so much easier for me.
He is always there to help me set up and tear down for the bake sales and the meet and greets. And he is always there with comforting words and hugs when I am upset and angry about the neglect, abuse and abandonment of animals.
Sincerely,
Sharon Van Steenis,
volunteer, Jay County
Humane Society
