Postal food drive scheduled Saturday (05/11/06)
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Our local letter carriers in Portland will join their counterparts across America as they collect non-perishable food donations from postal customers along their routes Saturday (May 13).
The 14th annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service, United Way and the AFL-CIO, with local participation from the Rural Letter Carriers Association and numerous volunteers. The theme of this year’s event is “Nice Day for a Drive.”
Letter carriers at more than 60 post offices and stations across Indiana will be participating in the annual event.
The event is the largest one-day food drive in the country. It is conducted by letter carriers with the assistance of rural carriers, other postal employees and volunteers. Donations across Indiana last year totaled more than 1.7 million pounds of food.
Residents are asked to leave non-perishable food donations in a bag near their mailbox on Saturday by 9 a.m. The food will be collected and taken to the Portland Post Office, where it will be sorted and taken to a local food pantry.
Portland residents can expect to see postcards and bags in Wednesday’s mail sponsored by the following: U.S. Postal Service, Pizza Hut, Dollar General, Coca-Cola, Sugar & Slice, REMC, Moser Engineering, Community Home Improvement, Patriot Sportswear, WPGW and Campbell Soup Company. Those with questions may call the post office at (260) 726-4315.
Employees of the Portland Post Office would like to thank our customers for their vast participation with this event.
Again this year, we hope to exceed last year’s totals and supply Community and Family Services’ Helping Hands Food Bank for the rest of the year.

Fishing thank yous
To the editor:
I would like to take this time to thank everyone who helped to make the Head Start fatherhood fishing tournament a success.
Thanks to the merchants listed below, we were able to have door prizes and also a prize for the biggest and littlest fish. It is wonderful to live in and be involved in such a caring and giving community.
Special thanks to the following merchants: Subway, AutoZone, Advance Auto, Pizza King, Arby’s, Pizza Hut, Movie Gallery, KFC/Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, Domino’s Pizza, Locker’s Country Gifts, and K&M Manufacturing.
And a very big thank you to the Jay County Conservation Club for allowing us to use their facilities and to Indiana Conservation Officer Dwane Ford for taking time out of his busy schedule to attend and bring some extra fishing poles with him.
