Progress that makes sense

Editorial

It's always painful to see an old school torn down, even when it makes sense. Those old buildings hold a community's memories.

But it was reassuring this week to see the care with which South Adams Middle School, once the site of Geneva High School, was being demolished.

And it was possible to envision something new and exciting for the Geneva community at the corner of U.S. 27 and Ind. 116.

Responding to concerns from town officials, the demolition contractors were doing their best to avoid damaging trees on the property. As a result, the vacant lot that will remain won't be barren but will have some mature trees, including at least one spectacular sycamore.

With the old school site reverting to the town, the lot becomes a blank slate for development of a showcase town park. Because of its location, it has the potential to be something like the old New England village square, a gathering place for families and community organizations.

Sad as it is to see the old building go, the potential for the future is tremendous. - J.R.
