Public thanked for recycling help (09/09/2008)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Jill, Sandy and I would like to publicly thank the citizens of this county for doing what seems to come naturally to you: Pitching in (literally) and helping to load the recycling boxes when groups fail to show up to staff the trailer. Sometimes groups get confused on their assigned weekend, someone gets sick, or they just forget. Usually we get a call fairly early on a Saturday morning from some concerned person who sees recyclables piling up around the boxes at the Marsh Hometown Market parking lot. Sometimes, another group sees the problem and gets this started.

Over Labor Day weekend people came by, saw the problem, and did their best to get the process started. By the time I got the message, you remarkable residents of Jay County had taken it upon yourselves to help out. When I arrived on the scene, almost everything was inside the trailer. When Jill and her daughter arrived a few minutes later, we were able to rearrange things so that everything else coming in would also fit into the recycling box.

Had you not been there for us again, we would have spent several hours loading your recyclables into the trailer.

Of course, it is our job to make sure it gets done, but it certainly is nice to know that there are so many helpful and caring people out there willing to pitch in when you see a need. You can all be proud of yourselves (we wish we could thank each one of your personally). We certainly are proud of you all and proud to say we're from Jay County. Thanks again for another job well done.

Fundraising

To the editor:

Recently the members of Gospel Lighthouse Church, 122 E. Race St., Portland, held a "Tabernacle Restoration" kick-off Sunday.

With a new motto, "The Tabernacle for a New Generation," the church has begun a fundraising campaign to raise money to begin Phase II of the work. Earlier, new windows were installed in the second story parsonage, and a new door replaced the side entrance door. A small former classroom on the platform's west side was taken down and the "Tablernacle River of Jordan" mural (60-feet wide) was extended to the far west wall. An eight-foot lighted cross was constructed by a church member.

Phase II includes the remodeling of the second story parsonage. This includes three bedrooms, kitchen and utility rooms, new dining room and an additional bath.

The public is invited to participate in the project.

In May, the church celebrated its 78th anniversary and decided to restore this landmark. In 1929 the Rev. Charles Fisher Evangelistic Party came to Portland from California to hold revival meetings.

Thousands of people came from miles for the next 20 years to witness wave after wave of the moving of the spirit. Healings, miracles and conversions took place in many area churches.

In December 1930, the Gospel Tabernacle Inn was dedicated after 47 working days. The Rev. Fisher had no intention of remaining here, but "things got out of hand" and the Tablernacle was built out of this revival movement.

Pictures of the Rev. Charles and Clara Fisher grace the vestibule of the church.

I encourage the public to participate in the fundraising. For more information, call (260) 726-7237.
