Quiet group, big donation
Editorial
Some organizations tend to operate below the radar.
That's the case of the Vintage Motor Bike Club, the national group that has been gathering at the Jay County Fairgrounds each summer for more than three decades.
The group comes into town - this year from July 12 through July 16 - rides vintage Whizzers and Vespas and the like around the fairgrounds and around Portland, has a few poker runs, and quietly heads home, vowing to meet again in Jay County next year.
They're great folks, but they're not the sort that likes to call attention to themselves.
Even their good works might often go unnoticed.
Take, for instance, one recent club decision.
With little fanfare, the Vintage Motor Bike Club has pledged to donate $12,000 - $4,000 a year for three years - to help fund electrical service improvements at the fairgrounds.
For a group that's not exactly rolling in dough, it's a significant commitment and a meaningful way to connect with the local community.
It would be a shame for it to pass by without a heartfelt thank you from all of us.
And welcome back this July. - J.R.
