Quotes will be sought
Jay County Commissioners
Jay County Commissioners gave approval this morning to solicit quotes for two new county police cruisers.
"I'm going to go ahead and try to get two new cars if possible," Sheriff Ray Newton said.
Newton pitched the idea last week to the Jay County Council, which said it would consider funding the new vehicles when presented with prices.
The two cars Newton is seeking to replace have about 160,000 and 140,000 miles on them and he said he thinks it will cost "about $20,000 per car" to replace.
Each car will need to be equipped with new narrowband radios as well, which will cost $2,000 each.
Newton had also mentioned to the council the possibility of purchasing a minivan to be used for transports. Commissioner Milo Miller Jr. followed up on the idea this morning, but those plans are being put on hold.
"I'm just going to wait," Newton said.
The commissioners told the sheriff to go ahead and get pricing on the cars to take back to the council next month.
Newton also mentioned to the commissioners that he will need to speak with them and the council about preparing to add new staff to the department in anticipation of the Jay County Jail expansion completion.
The new wing of the jail, which may be completed by August, will require additional staff to function efficiently. Newton said he would like to see those employees start training in June if possible.
The county council cut funding for new staff, utilities and other costs out of the jail budget with the intention to replace the money at a later date.
In other business this morning, the commissioners:
•Signed emergency claims to purchase land from nearby property owners in preparation of replacing Bridge No. 54, which is just east on U.S. 27 on county road 500 North.
The commissioners signed claims for Thomas and Sharon Ninde, $200; Flauding Cemetery, $700; Menno and Effie Coblentz, $27,300; and Michael and Lana Ninde, $1,100.
•Signed emergency claims totaling $115,683 to pay for liability insurance for county departments.
•Signed an emergency claim of $852.60 for fuel tax to the Indiana Department of Revenue.[[In-content Ad]]
