Race could be interesting
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
I thought it was about time someone did a really fair analysis of the Lugar vs. Mourdock Senate primary race so I volunteered to work for Richard Mourdock in the Republican tent at the Jay County Fair.
What I discovered was very interesting.
Of the Republican candidates I talked to eight out of ten were already Mourdock supporters, one was undecided, and one was a solid Lugar supporter. These were all people who were very involved in politics, aware of the issues, and aware of Lugar’s liberal votes on many issues. Many of these people said that he has just been in Washington too long.
Most other people visiting the Republican tent are also interested in politics and aware of the issues. Of these, more than 50 percent indicated that they are already Richard Mourdock supporters. Of the rest about half became instant Mourdock supporters when they heard about Lugar’s record of voting for gun control, cap and trade, and amnesty for illegal immigrants.
Many question the validity of a recent Club for Growth poll of 500 likely Republican primary voters that showed Mourdock at 34 percent, Lugar at 32 percent, and 34 percent undecided. My totally informal and unscientific poll supports these results. Informed Republican voters overwhelmingly supported Mourdock. And, facing his first real primary in decades, Lugar will soon be in big trouble because now he will no longer be able to hide his liberal votes from the people of Indiana.
