Rally urges equal rights for all citizens (10/04/07)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

From 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, Indiana citizens will rally at the state capitol to deliver a simple but powerful message: both straight and gay people are in support of equal rights for all gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans, and their families.

This landmark event is part of a nationwide action called "Seven Straight Nights for Equal Rights." All across the country, between Oct. 8 and 14, straight Americans will stand up beside their LGBT sisters and brothers and proudly assert their respect and support for their LGBT communities.

In Indianapolis, the effort is being led by myself, Rev. Andy Burnette. I am a minister who was motivated to action by my belief that all persons should have equal rights and protection under the law. Over the last several months, we have organized an impressive coalition of Hoosiers who will gather at the state capitol to discuss equal rights for all.

The vigil features speakers James Mulholland (Quaker minister and co-author of "If Grace is True: Why God Will Save Every Person" and "If God Is Love: Rediscovering Grace in an Ungracious World"), Rev. Dennis McCarty (author, musician, and Unitarian Universalist minister from Columbus), and myself, a former fundamentalist and current Unitarian Universalist minister in Danville. Recording artist Tim Hoover will provide musical entertainment.

At 3:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Christ Church Cathedral, there will be a screening of the new documentary, "Inlaws and Outlaws." The film weaves together stories of persons married and single, gay and straight to remind us of what we all have in common: we love.

Christ Church Cathedral is located at 125 Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis.

"Seven Straight Nights for Equal Rights" is a joint project of Atticus Circle and Soulforce. Atticus Circle is a national non-profit that is dedicated to achieving equality for all partners, parents, and their children regardless of sexual orientation. Soulforce is a national social justice organization that seeks freedom for LGBT people from religious and political oppression through the practice of relentless non-violent resistance.
