NEW KNOXVILLE, Ohio - Perhaps that No. 1 ranking was the kiss of death.
Fort Recovery was 11-0 and the top-ranked team in Division IV in the first Associated Press poll of the season released Wednesday. Thursday, its perfect season disappeared.
The Indians led for the first three quarters, but allowed a 12-2 run and fell 42-38 to the New Knoxville Rangers.
The victory marked a bit of revenge for New Knoxville, which suffered its only two losses of the 2005-06 season to Fort Recovery.
The Tribe had leads of five points in the opening quarter and eight in the second, but gave up a 9-2 run to allow the Rangers to pull within one at halftime. The Indians (11-1) again pushed their lead to six in the third quarter, but New Knoxville used a 12-2 run bridging the quarter break to take a 32-28 advantage.
Two free throws from Vicki Roessner pulled the Tribe even at 32, but the Rangers surged to another five-point lead and never trailed again. A Tiff Gaerke jumper got Fort Recovery within one point with 1:24 to play, but the Indians did not score again until there were just four seconds on the clock.
New Knoxville, which was 15th in the Division IV voting, grabbed the victory thanks to its advantage at the foul line as both teams struggled from the field - the home team hit 11-of-34 (32 percent) and the Tribe shot 12-of-40 (30 percent). The Rangers made 19 of their 26 free throws, including 12-of-15 (80 percent) in the second half, while Fort Recovery went 11-of-16 from the line.
Nicole Wright hit 7-of-9 free throws as she shared the game-high of 11 points with the Indians' Abby Niekamp. Wright also grabbed 14 rebounds, nearly three times as many as any Indian, and had four assists and two blocks.
Haley Kruse added nine points and four steals.
Niekamp hit three 3-pointers, all the first half, but the rest of the squad went 0-for-12 from long distance. Roessner added nine pints, four assists and three steals, and Gaerke and Sara Fortkamp each had five rebounds.
