Reader: State not protecting kids
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
I have read with great interest all of the news concerning the safety of children in Indiana. Many of you are unaware of why all of this is happening.
Well, after spending 10 years working for the Healthy Families program for the Youth Service Bureau in our area, I can tell you in all honesty that it is because our state leaders, headed by Mitch Daniels and Judge Payne have destroyed the best prevention of child abuse in our state by ending the funding.
Common sense should tell all caring people that there is a reason why people abuse children: Ignorance, anger, drugs, alcohol, domestic violence and on and on.
The Child Services, headed by Judge Payne, received money and nearly 800 new employees to “fight child abuse.”
Now, think about it! These people go in after the harm is done.
Programs such as Healthy Families worked with families, especially mothers, when the child is born, to give vital information, help with all facets of life, in order to prevent child abuse.
Our state took away all funding for prevention. The toll free hotline, and idea of Judge Payne, is a problem. If you saw abuse right in front of your eyes and tried to call for someone to help, wouldn’t you be frustrated by being told to call a hotline in Indianapolis, and then being questioned by a stranger who read a list of questions, many of which you could not answer.
Reporting child abuse should not be so complicated and it should be local. Our representatives, Bill Davis and Travis Holdman need to stop following the failed leadership in the statehouse and do what’s right. And those of you who voted for them should also think long and hard before you vote for them again.

Many thanks
To the editor:
My name is Shane, and I am writing this letter to thank Jay County EMTs and Portland Police.
I have very brittle diabetes and you have saved my life countless times. One day I hope to repay you for all you have done for me and my family.
A special thank you to Ray, Jason and Officer Josh. You three have been here through a lot of battles with me and there are hardly words to tell you what it means.
Your friends,
Shane Teer and Jo White
