Reader upset with Habitat

To the editor:
I am a long time resident of Portland and a single mother of two. I recently was disappointed in a local organization, Habitat for Humanity.
I applied for the new house being built in Portland. After a month, I did receive a call for a home interview and then an interview with the board. The night of the board interview it seemed to start off great but then several of the board members seemed to attack my personal life. I felt I was being asked questions that did not pertain to my present situation.
I am a struggling mother working two jobs to make a decent living for my kids as best as I knew how. By the way, one of my jobs I have worked at for 10 years. But they discussed situations in my life that were 5 years or more old.
I knew going into the interview there was another family being interviewed. I was told the other family was friends with certain board members.
At the end of the interview I asked when I would find out if I would be the recipient of the house or not. The board said they were voting that evening. The board president said “You will know as soon as we know”.
To this day I have yet to receive a phone call from the board. I did found out two days later from a fellow co-worker, who knows the board members. She sent me a personal email saying sorry you didn’t get the house. I couldn’t believe they didn’t have enough respect to inform me that I didn’t get chosen for the house. It only takes a few minutes to pick up a phone and use it.
Habitat for Humanity was made to help people in need, so I thought, but first they make you feel like the lowest person for making a few mistakes in your past. I am in need of help and they didn’t help me, they made me feel worse about my situation. They asked me questions that did not pertain to my current situation.
The Habitat for Humanity board members need to rethink about why they are on the board. Is it to make others feel worse and make themselves feel better? Or is it to get your friends new houses?
