Ready for fair week
New Englanders have their Old Home Days.
Here in the Midwest we have county fairs.
There's no better time than this week to gather together, see one another, renew old friendships, and re-start old conversations that may have been interrupted than this week.
In an era when the tsunami of electronic media and the Internet overload our circuits and create an illusion of connectedness, there's nothing better than face to face, howdy-how-are-you-doing human contact with those who share our local economy, politics, environment, demographics, and geography.
Spend an evening at the Jay County Fair, and you'll see what we mean.
For decades now, we've argued that it's the best county fair in Indiana.
Countless volunteer hours by fair board members, 4-H leaders, kids, civic organizations, and the community at large make it all possible.
But to take advantage of it, you'll need to overcome the inertia that often hits at the end of the day. Get out of that recliner. Get out of the house. Head to the fairgrounds. And put a smile on your face.
Our guess is you won't regret it. - J.R.
