Ready to tear it down (03/03/2009)
Jay County Commissioners
Jay County Commissioners are ready to begin receiving bids for demolition of a former car dealership to make way for the expansion of the county jail.
The county will soon begin advertising for and accepting bids on demolition of the building at the corner of Ship and Main streets as the jail project continues to chug forward.
A pre-bid inspection of the building is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16. Bids for the job will be opened at 1 p.m. on March 30.
Once demolition of the building is complete, the next step in the expansion process will be to take secondary environmental studies including soil bores.
The county will also have to find and remove any underground fuel tanks left over from the dealership.
The commissioners and SchenkelShultz architect Jeff Badders think there is only one fuel tank and have an idea where it is, though there may be more they are unaware of.
The commissioners also received a quote Monday from Indiana Michigan Power to move utilities in the expansion path. The company named a price of $31,788.07 to move power lines, less than half of the original estimate of about $80,000.[[In-content Ad]]
