MUNCIE - A week ago the Patriots ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. But they also walked away with some positive feelings after a strong performance against an undefeated team.

It was hard to find the silver lining Friday night.

The Muncie Southside Rebels out-gained the Jay County High School football team nearly 2-to-1 offensively and forced four turnovers as they won 41-22 in Olympic Athletic Conference action.

"I'm dumbfounded. It was a tale of two teams," JCHS coach Shane Hill said in referencing the difference between last week's seven-point loss to Anderson Highland as compared to the loss to Southside. "That was not the same team we watched against Anderson Highland, not at all. I don't know the reason, but we have to get it fixed.

"I don't think that we came out and executed the game plan the same way we did last week. ... For one reason or another we just didn't get it done very well ...

"We didn't come to play at all. ... I don't know the reason."

The Patriots (2-3, 0-2 OAC) had a difficult go of things after Ben Vance returned the opening kickoff all the way to the Southside 32-yard line. They gained just one yard on their first three plays, and then kept the offense on the field on fourth down. The Rebels' McKenzee Nash picked off Zach Cash's pass attempt and returned it 65 yards up the right sideline to give his team a lead it would never relinquish.

Shayon Cork added three more interceptions, all on deep passes in the middle of the field. Each of them led to a Southside touchdown as the Rebels built a 34-8 lead when Shaq Buchanan reached the end zone with his second TD early in the third quarter.

The takeaways helped Southside light up the scoreboard after posting 14 or fewer points in each of its previous three games.

"It's big," said Rebel coach Mike Paul. "You don't have to go the length of the field whenever you get something like that. It's real important.

"I think we played pretty well. I'm pretty happy with them. They're getting better every week."

Between the two Buchanan TD runs, Cork scored on carries of 40 and 8 yards. He also added a 40-yard TD run the fourth quarter as he led Southside with 97 rushing yards on just five carries.

Buchanan chipped in another 71 yards, and quarterback Nick Dyer completed all but six of his 23 pass attempts for 247 yards. His favorite target, Coty Reynolds, caught 10 passes for 133 yards.

"Shayon Cork, he had three interceptions, offensively and defensively he was outstanding tonight," said Paul. "Shaq played an excellent game. Cork had an excellent game. Dyer made some big plays when we needed them."

In all Southside (3-2, 1-0 OAC) gained 478 yards compared to just 254 for the Patriots. And 95 of the JCHS total came after the Rebels had the ball at the 1-yard line with more than four minutes to play and took a knee three times rather than trying to punch the ball into the end zone in an attempt to extend what was already a 26-point lead.

Ben Vance scored the only first-half touchdown for the Patriots on a 24-yard pass from Cash, who ran for the 2-point conversion. Cash (12 carries, 84 yards) added a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter, and Vance ran in for a 38-yard TD with just 2:41 left in the game.

The Patriots played the game without leading rusher Michael Daniels, who is serving a school-imposed disciplinary action. Paul noted that in looking at film it was the JCHS running game that impressed him the most.

"They ran the ball on everybody, including Delta," said Paul, whose team visits Jay County for a non-conference game Oct. 9. "But Daniels is missing. That really hurts them.

"I think it'll be a heck of a game the next time we play them."

In addition to Cash's 84 yards, Vance had 49 on the ground for the Patriots and freshman Blake Crouch totaled 45. Vance also had three receptions for 39 yards.

Dillon Easton led the defense with 13 tackles.

"Tonight was an off night for us," said Hill. "But like I told them in the end zone just a minute ago, this was a bad game, it doesn't make a bad season. We've got a lot of opportunities left to go. We've got to put this one behind us and move forward."[[In-content Ad]]
