Receiving a full ride (04/03/08)
Tuition and money for books won't be a problem this fall for two Jay County High School seniors.
Kaleb Hemmelgarn and Lee Haggenjos were named as the 2008 recipients of The Portland Foundation's Lilly Endowment Community scholarship on Wednesday afternoon.
Hemmelgarn, the son of Doug and Karen Hemmelgarn, plans to attend Wabash College in the fall and study economics.
Haggenjos, the son of Dr. Mark and Donna Haggenjos, will attend Notre Dame University and study biology and music.
The two will receive full tuition and an $800 annual stipend for books and equipment. They were chosen out of 22 students who applied for the scholarship. Criteria for the scholarship included academic excellence, financial need, involvement in school and community activities, if the student will be the first generation college student and response to an essay question.
Hemmelgarn, rural Portland, is ranked 10th in his class with a grade point average of 3.968. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the FFA and 4-H. He also is a member of the Junior Fair Board and the First Merchant's Senior Advisory Board.
He played football for four years and was All-Conference, All-State and Academic All-State in 2007. He also served as team captain in 2007 and was named offensive player of the year in 2006 and 2007.
Haggenjos is ranked first in his class with a grade point average of 4.095. The rural Portland resident is a member of the National Honor Society, the Academic Team, the band, the Student Council, the Junior Classical League and the Thespian Society. He also is the vice president of his class and has been in several plays.
He has studied classical guitar for several years and plays in a rock band.
The scholarships are part of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative designed to help Hoosiers reach higher education.[[In-content Ad]]
