FORT RECOVERY - In their first home meet of the season, the Indians could not have asked for much more.
They came away with two school records.
Two athletes each racked up three wins.
And the girls team clobbered three opponents.
Fort Recovery's girls track team, led by record-breaking efforts in both the 4x100-meter relay and the pole vault, racked up 112 points. It finished well ahead of runner-up Russia (74), Franklin Monroe (40) and Jackson Center (17).
The boys team, paced by Aaron Vagedes' three victories, finished as the runner-up with 64 points. Russia scored 104 to take the win followed by the Tribe, Franklin Monroe (45) and Jackson Center (33).
Brunswick, a junior, finished off a banner day by getting Fort Recovery off to a great start on the first leg of the 4x100 relay. She handed off to Abby May, a freshman who earned two individual wins of her own, and then May gave the baton to fellow freshman Kelsey Fiely.
By the time Fiely handed off for the final leg, Kylie Kaiser was running alone well ahead of the pack. She charged toward the line and completed the relay in 53.9 seconds, shattering the previous school record set just two years earlier by Holly Brunswick, Marissa Brunswick, Alison Tobe and Jessica Link.
Sophomore Olivia Schwieterman set the other record for the Indians, breaking her own mark in the pole vault. She cleared the bar at 8 feet, 6 inches, surpassing her previous record by a half-foot.
Prior to the impressive relay effort, Brunswick dominated both the long jump and the 100 hurdles.
She outdistanced the field by more than a foot at 15 feet, ½ inch and took the hurdles by more than a second in 16.7 seconds.
Brunswick also cleared the high jump bar at a winning height of 5 feet, 2 inches.
May led a one-two finish for the Indians in the 100 dash, taking the top spot in 13.7 ahead of Tobe. She also took the 300 hurdles in 52.5.
The freshman joined Kahlig, Amy Link and Amber Heitkamp to put up a winning time of 2:03 in the 4x200 relay.
Vagedes set the pace for the FRHS boys with a pair of sprint wins as well as one in a field event.
The sophomore held on by less than a second to take the 400 dash in 54.3, and also tied Matthew Busse of Russia for first in the 100 dash in 12.2. He added a leap of 18 feet, 5 ¾ inches to place first in the long jump.
Mark Mattraw picked up the other two wins for the boys team. He led a one-two finish in the shot put at 41 feet, 2 inches with Jordan Bechtol in second place, and also took the top spot in the discus by nearly 15 feet at 124 feet.
Kahlig made it a shot put sweep for the Indians, taking the girls event by more than six feet with a toss of 33 feet. Mikayla Westgerdes won the discus at 85 feet, 7 ½ inches with teammate Abby Huelskamp in second.
Amy Link was first in the 200 dash in 29.5.[[In-content Ad]]
