Recycling a valuable public service (07/22/2008)
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
My husband and I have lived in several communities, all of them larger than Portland. None of those cities had curbside recycling. When moving here, we were happy to learn that Portland has this service. We have recycled for years, even when it meant driving several miles to the nearest recycling center. There was never a question. We just did it. We taught our children to recycle, and now it's also a part of their lives. They, in turn, are teaching our grandchildren to do the same.
The entire community should be taking advantage of this service. It's so easy to take that red container to the curb. We, as individuals, can't control many of the things that are affecting our planet. This is one small thing we can do to help future generations. I sincerely hope that we don't lose this service and that our entire community will take advantage of it. We CAN make a difference!
Sincerely,
Carol Johnston

Why?
To the editor:
My name is Dan Donnersbach. I am serving an 18-year sentence in the Indiana Department of Correction. A lot of you know me, and a lot of you didn't.
My point is that serving the time itself doesn't bother me as much as the fact that the ones that know who I am and I thought were my friends and know why I am here, have forgotten me entirely.
I don't need to mention names because they already know who they are. I was once very popular there living among these people and having someplace for them to hang out or what have you.
It really saddens me to realize I lost everything I owned and nine years of my life that I can't spare, for the very things that made me so popular to these same people. Am I the only criminal in this picture?
If what I'm in here for is so wrong, then can someone please tell me why have all these same people abandoned me now since I can't do it anymore? If what I claim is not the truth, I more than welcome any response to this claim.
Otherwise, I must speak and write the truth.
Send responses to: Dan Donnersbach #174269, 13 South, Putnamville Correctional Facility, 1946 West U.S. 40, Greencastle, IN, 46135.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Dan Donnersbach
