Recycling makes sense (07/14/2008)
Letter to the Editor
To the editor:
Recycling is not new, and making it work again is progress. Who would want to do away with progress?
Recycling lowers costs, saves room in the landfill, saves trees and mineral deposits and the list could go on for hours. It also makes me feel good to know that I'm not polluting the earth more than necessary.
Why wouldn't you recycle glass and aluminum? They will never rot in a landfill? It lowers cost and prevents overuse of the materials used to make them. Aluminum is recyclable forever and worth money to the owner.
You may be able to sell enough aluminum a month to pay the recycle bill, and you will also be helping the planet. Speaking of the recycling cost, how many times this week have you spent $3 and didn't know where it went a few hours later?
Plastic is made from OIL. We should be recycling all the plastic we can find. If this country didn't use so much oil to make plastic the price might not be so high. Oil is in a lot of things that you wouldn't even think about.
If recycling had continued after World War II our country wouldn't be in the mess it's in. If you recall, all metal was recycled for the war effort. How many junk cars are in your neighborhood?
Apparently, Mr. Coleman was not reared in a family that reused and recycled things, it was a way of life on farm where I grew up.
I would hate for recycling to be done away with because people are just too lazy to do it!
Sincerely,
Susie Martin
