Red Gold ponders project (01/04/06)
Geneva Town Council
GENEVA — Red Gold Inc. may be expanding again.
Rick Jones, plant manager at the tomato processing company presented plans to the Geneva Town Council Tuesday night to expand and update a part of the plant that could eventually carry a $12 million price tag.
Red Gold plans call for updating the cookroom to allow the plant to process tomato products during the pack season that are not currently done at the Geneva plant during that time.
But before a request for tax abatement can be submitted, Jones told council members Jim Timmons, Mike Schwartz, and Lew Wingler that the town of Geneva should be designated an economic revitalization area. That designation will allow Red Gold to apply for a tax abatement for the new construction. The council approved the request for the resolution for the economic revitalization, and action on the tax abatement request is expected to be taken at the council’s Feb. 7 meeting.
In other business Tuesday night Wingler was elected president of the council, and Schwartz was elected vice-president.
Reappointment of department heads included John Kleinknight, fire chief; Rob Johnson, acting marshal; and Jason Wilkie, park board president. The council’s longtime attorney, Chris Harvey, was also reappointed.
Other appointments included, Terry Koons, William Warren, Richard Clutter, Donald Graber, Timmons, Schwartz, and Wingler to the Geneva Plan Commission; and William Warren, Terry Koons, Lynn Burry, Kenny Schwartz, and Eleanor Morris to the Board of Zoning Appeals.
Town clerk-treasurer, Doug Milligan, will serve as the town’s representative on the Adams County Economic Development Corp.
In other business:
•Heard Curtis Vanover ask if the annex building (the former police department building) could be used as an exercise facility for police and town employees. The council agreed to study Vanover’s request.
•Heard town manager, Steve Hampshire, say the town purchased 29,000 pounds of salt in the last month to be spread on the icy roadways.[[In-content Ad]]
