Redkey candidate's eligibility challenged (02/18/06)

By By MARY ANN LEWIS-

A member of the Redkey Town Council has filled a challenge with the Jay County Election Board against a Redkey resident running for a seat on the council in the May primary.

Dortha Quakenbush filed the challenge Friday in the Jay County Clerk’s office against James Clayton Phillips, 321 E. High St.

In the challenge, Quakenbush says “the address given by him is indeed owned by him but that is not his present address.”

“This is the first challenge I’ve ever had,” clerk Jane Ann Runyon said Friday afternoon.

The election board set a hearing for Friday, March 3 at 1:30 p.m. in the commissioner’s room at Jay County Courthouse.

Additionally, meeting for the first time this year, the board elected Tim Southworth as chairman of the board, Carmen Craig, vice-chairman, and Runyon, secretary.

The board also adopted three resolutions that will be in place during the upcoming primary election.

“This is a tough election,” Runyon said. “There’s so much new stuff this year, I’m a nervous wreck.”

The board agreed to use electronic voting machines for the first time for absentee voters casting their votes at the courthouse.

“I’m worried about older people not knowing what they’re doing,” Southworth said.

“It’s not a binding thing,” Runyon said. “You can change your mind,” explaining that by adopting the resolution, the county will have the option of using the machines or reverting back to the paper ballots if the move proves too difficult.

Additionally the three-member board also passed a resolution determining that all provisional ballots would be counted at the courthouse.

Those are ballots voters cast without the proper identification. Those voters have 13 days following the election to provide the proper identification.

Additionally, Craig and Runyon voted to provide voter information to candidates on a CD, as well as on the regular paper copy.

Southworth voted against the resolution, noting it made it too easy for anyone to gain access to that public information.

Runyon, however, explained that providing hard copy to candidates is both time consuming and expensive.

The board also voted to do away with a sheriff’s worker at the polling sites, and agreed to having an inspector, two judges, and two clerks to watch over the polling process.[[In-content Ad]]
