Redkey clerk Adkins quits (10/28/05)

By By ROBERT BANSER and MIKE SNYDER-

Redkey Clerk-Treasurer Brenda Adkins turned in a two-sentence letter of resignation late Thursday afternoon to the Jay County Clerk’s office.

The letter states, “To whom it may concern: I Brenda Adkins resign my position as clerk-treasurer of the town of Redkey. Effective immediately for personal reasons.”

John Brooke, who serves as attorney for the town, said this morning that a recently-concluded audit by the Indiana State Board of Accounts found “irregularities.” He would not comment on the specifics of the problems.

Attempts to reach Adkins for comment were also unsuccessful.

A spokesperson from the board of accounts said this morning he could not comment on the audit until a final report is issued in approximately six to eight weeks.

The resignation not only left the town without a clerk, it also apparently left town employees without paychecks today.

Violet Erlenbush, president of the Redkey Council and a city employee, said that Adkins, who is responsible for payroll and payment of other claims, apparently did not complete the payroll that should have been handed out today.

Adkins had been under fire at several recent town board meetings regarding the town’s financial record-keeping practices and water-billing procedures.

Erlenbush said she had been informed at 8 a.m. today by someone from the state board of accounts that “Brenda had turned in her resignation yesterday afternoon.”

“We’ve got a lot of devastated workers,” said Erlenbush who also is the sewer department superintendent for the town.

Erlenbush explained that was unaware of Adkins’ resignation when she and two other town council members had met in special session (see story elsewhere on this page) Thursday afternoon to discuss changes for the police department.

Erlenbush said that Adkins told them she was ill and would not be able to attend that session. The clerk-treasurer’s office was subsequently closed while that meeting took place from approximately 3:30 to 5 p.m.

“I really can’t tell you anything else, other than she has resigned,” Erlenbush said.

Brooke, who was asked by the town board to look into financial difficulties of the town when it was forced to take out a loan to meet payroll earlier this year, said the town board is interested in hiring an interim clerk until one is appointed by a caucus of Redkey Democrats.

“The financial problems that (Redkey) had brough this to a head. They raised enough flags to cause the state to do a thorough audit,” Brooke said.

Bruce Hartman, State Examiner with the state boad of accounts, said this morning that “we cannot discuss the audit or the contents of the audit in any shape or form,” until it is completed.[[In-content Ad]]
