Redkey council works to solve problems (10/04/05)

To the editor:

This letter is in reply to an editorial in the Sept. 23, 2005 paper. I am in my second year of a 4-year term as a Redkey Town Board member.

I thoroughly agree that elections should go through primary voting; however, the town board had never been approached by either Democratic or Republican leaders for a voting change. When we were approached on this, we gladly as a board went along with the change and voted to do so, no questions asked.

Now, for family, friends, and cronies, speaking for myself, hopefully my family, friends, and cronies would still be a vote for me no matter what voting system was used.

As one of the town board, we as a board work together to better Redkey, which is our main goal. Redkey’s problems started long before this present board. As for quality of leadership, I feel this board will succeed in getting not all but some important issues accomplished for the betterment of Redkey.

This is only and, I repeat, only my opinion. I feel the last election would have had the same results if done by a primary election that it did by the caucus.

I do agree, it’s a start.

League thanks

To the editor:

The Portland Junior League Board would like to take this opportunity to thank the many individuals and businesses that made this year’s baseball and softball seasons successful.

This year 425 boys and girls participated in our leagues. There were 24 baseball and 13 softball teams with children from 6 to 15 years old. All the leagues were competitive, and many exciting games were played.

We would like to thank the children who played this year and their parents who supported them. This year we asked the players to sell raffle tickets in order to raise money for new equipment. This money ensures that the league purchases the equipment necessary for each team to participate, repairs or replaces existing equipment, and maintains the condition of the fields. This campaign was very successful, and we want to let the families know how much we appreciate their efforts.

It takes the efforts of many volunteers to assure that the season has as few difficulties as possible.

Many thanks go to the board members and other volunteers. They handle registrations, maintained equipment, ran the draft, ordered uniforms, scheduled games, worked concessions, etc. These efforts during the summer enabled the kids to play in a healthy, competitive environment. We are grateful for the Jay County High School girls’ basketball team and boys’ wrestling team for staffing the concessions.

We would also like to thank the individuals who stepped forward and volunteered to be coaches for the teams. Without you, the season would not happen.

Your willingness to give your time and teach the children the fundamentals of the sport is highly commendable. Also our thanks goes to the commissioners of each league who spent every evening at the fields, making sure they were ready and that all games went off without fail.

We are very appreciative of the individuals who helped by umpiring this season and for keeping sportsmanship in mind.

Finally we would like to give our sincere appreciation to all of the businesses who unselfishly donated money to sponsor teams or signs that are displayed on the outfield fences. Those sponsors include: Healthcare Strategies, Patriot Paints, Coca-Cola, Barnett’s Auto Parts, Ponderosa, Williams Auto Parts, Jay County Monuments, Doane Pet Care, All Circuit Electric, Pak-A-Sak, Jamar, Optimist Club, Inman U Lock, MainSource Bank, PG-14, Renegade Customs, Kiwanis, Habegger Ace Lumber, Lions Club, Local 1620, First National Bank, Graphic Printing, Elks, Moose, Loy Auction and Real Estate, Strohl Appliances and Electronics, Sertech Heating and Cooling, Jay County REMC, Americare Living Center, Crossroads Credit Union, Indoor Comfort by Vance, Dunn Family Dentistry, Sibery Electric and S&H Transport, Adams Physical Therapy, American Legion, Coy’s Mobility, FCC of Indiana, Portland Tire and Service, attorney Jill Gonzalez, LPI Inc., Moser Engineering, Portland True Value, Nature’s Green, Qualtech Tool and Engineering, Ritz Theatre, TJ’s Bicycle and Moped Sales, Urgent Care Clinic, Wabash Electric, XPLEX, Aker-Taylor Plumbing, Hough’s Auto Salvage, Fisher Realty, Ken Kunkle Chevrolet, Miller Aviation, Pacesetter Bank, Progressive Office Products, Central Gases, Como Service, The Portland Foundation, Jay County Hospital, LoBill Foods, Medler Furniture, Mutual Security, Raymond James and Associates, Vore’s Welding and Steel, and Vormohr Medical Center. Their donations help make this league possible, and their interest in supporting the youth in our community is one of the things that makes Jay County such a great place to raise children.

Again, we thank everyone for their support and look forward to having an even more successful season next year.
