Redkey gets water grant (07/01/08)

The town of Redkey officially received its long-awaited $500,000 Community Focus Fund grant Monday for water system improvements in a special ceremony at the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs in Indianapolis.

These funds, coupled with another grant and loan money from the U. S. Department of Agriculture, will allow the community to begin work on replacing its nearly 100-year-old water tower tank as well as making other improvements to the town's water system infrastructure and plant.

The USDA grant totals $220,000 and USDA loans are expected to reach $1.2 million, putting the price tag for the total project in excess of $1.9 million.

An initial application about a year ago for the CFF grant was turned down by state officials, but the town successfully re-applied for the grant funds, demonstrating that there was a great deal of public support for the project.

Speaking in the office of Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman where the grant presentation ceremony was held Monday, State Rep. Bill Davis, R-Portland, said, "I applaud these efforts to secure funding for local projects. Applying for the Community Focus Fund grants is a competitive process, and I commend the leaders of Redkey who took the initiative to get involved. This funding provides communities the ability to better themselves, without any financial burden."

Davis added that Redkey intends to use its grant to make a number of improvements to the town's water system, including replacing mains in the south, west and center sections of town, a new treatment plant, new water tower, and new water metering system.

The changes will reduce fluctuations in the water system, provide better fire-fighting capabilities, reduce maintenance costs and provide consistent service to the citizens of the community, Davis said.

He added that this $500,000 grant to Redkey, along with a recent $525,000 CFF grant to Jay County Commissioners for a combined Dunkirk Fire Station and Jay Emergency Medical Services facility, adds up to a total of more than $1 million in state grants to Jay County in recent months.

Both grant applications were prepared by community developer Ami Huffman of Jay County Development Corporation.[[In-content Ad]]
