Redkey may land fish processing plant (01/03/07)
Jay County Development Corporation
By By MARY ANN LEWIS-
After setting nearly empty since its creation about 15 years ago, Redkey's Industrial Park is being eyed by an Albany resident who hopes to establish a fish processing operation.
Jay County Development Corporation board members learned Monday afternoon that Michael Miller, owner of Bell Aqua Culture in Albany, has expressed an interest in purchasing about 28 acres of the 56-acre site west of Redkey along Ind. 67.
Pat Bennett, president of the JCDC board, explained to members that Miller's plans would raise the yellow perch in ponds located north of Albany.
The fish would then be brought to the proposed Redkey site for processing into fillets and flash freezing. Waste from the process would be treated and used as fertilizer, Bennett said.
"This plant would take them through the process to get the meat from the fish. It's frozen so there's no odor from this process," Bennett explained.
Miller, who serves as secretary-treasurer of the Indiana Aquaculture Commission, is currently in the process of developing the Albany ponds, Bennett said, adding, "This is a critical step to make this work."
The only other such plant in operation in the U.S. is located on Lake Erie, Bennett said of the proposed local operation.
The only current occupant of the Redkey Industrial Park is Mike Rinker Farm Equipment. That business is located at the entrance to the park off Ind. 67 southwest of Redkey.
Also Tuesday afternoon, the board learned that John Nill, CEO of Jay County REMC, has resigned from the JCDC board and approved REMC employee, Ron Laux, as his replacement.
Additionally, members heard community developer, Ami Huffman, say that restoration of the one-room school in Salamonia is nearing completion.
The building, located adjacent to the park on the north side of town, will serve as a community center.
The majority of the cost of the renovation was paid for by a state grant of $225,000.
Members were also reminded that a tour of a wind farm in Bowling Green, Ohio, is set for Jan. 13, and anyone interested in going should contact the JCDC office.[[In-content Ad]]
