Redkey still going for grant (02/15/08)

Redkey Town Council

REDKEY - Efforts are continuing to obtain a $500,000 state grant to fund water system improvements here, and a public hearing on the issue is scheduled for 6 p.m. next Thursday at town hall.

A special meeting of the town council to discuss details of the project with an engineering firm was postponed and will be rescheduled, Redkey Town Council president Doug Stanley said.

Commonwealth Engineering has been retained to work on the project, which could include replacement of the town's 90-year-old water tower, upgrades at the water plant and replacement of other water supply infrastructure.

A date and time for that future meeting has yet to be set, Redkey clerk-treasurer Sandy Kirby said.

Stanley is encouraging as many residents as possible to attend Thursday's hearing, which will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the monthly meeting of the town council.

Lack of a solid show of public support for the project was one of the key factors responsible for the failure of a previous attempt last year to obtain the grant funds, Stanley said. He said the initial grant request fell just short of reaching its goal, and he feels more public input could push this second attempt over the top.

Combined with other grant funds as well as loans from the United States Department of Agriculture, the money will be used to upgrade the town's water plant, replace the community's 90-year-old water tower and reservoir tank with a new larger one, and upgrade water mains at various locations in town.

"We scored very well the first time, but the competition was keen and there were a lot of second round entries," Stanley said, adding that he has been told it's difficult to win approval for a project on the first try.

"We just missed it last time. Hopefully, we will do better now on our second attempt," Stanley said.

Jay County community developer Ami Huffman is expected to be present to answer questions at Thursday's public hearing. She is preparing the grant request in cooperation with town officials.

The grant application must be submitted by March 14 to the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.[[In-content Ad]]
