Reduction in superintendant pay urged (06/16/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Now that there is a current need to search for a new superintendent for the Jay School Corporation, the school board, in its infinite wisdom, would do well to consider to vote for a cut in pay and benefits for this position.

It's something to consider because of the budget constraints that we taxpayers who help fund our school system face in our daily lives.

The fact that the position pays $80,000.00 in coin per annum is a little more than I can fathom given the amount of truly stressful work and mind boggling amounts of labor that surely must be performed in this position, not to mention the benefits and perks that go along with it.

Let's face facts here, it could be done cheaper and the people know it, I mean after all, how much do you really need to be paid to determine if it's too foggy to go to school?

Horse adoption

To the editor:

The recent tragic injury suffered by Barbaro, the horse that won the Kentucky Derby and was a favorite to win the Triple Crown, has brought to light a grave situation that is part of professional horse racing.

Fortunately, it appears that Barbaro will recover and while he’ll never race again, he can be expected to live out his life siring future champions.

Every year in Indiana many horses whom are not as famous but are no less magnificent suffer injuries that end their career. Their future isn’t as bright. Often these horses end up at auctions where they are sold for slaughter for either animal or human consumption.

These once awesome athletes that have given everything for their sport and to their owner are carted off in unspeakable conditions to be destroyed when their best years may still be ahead of them.

CANTER of Indiana is an organization that works to adopt out horses that are no longer sound for racing but who are still great companions.

Volunteers work the racetracks in Indiana seeking out trainers who have horses that are no longer racers. These horses are offered for adoption with a nominal adoption fee. Keeping a horse isn’t for everyone but CANTER needs much more than homes for horses. Please visit the website: http://www.canterusa.org/indiana/index.htm to see what you can do for this and similar organizations that know that a horses best years are still ahead of them after they are retired from racing. Thank you.
