Religion has place in public

A teacher asked her class of third graders if they knew anything about whales. A little girl said she knew a whale swallowed Jonah. The teacher was an atheist and said, “You can’t prove that.”

The little girl said, “Well, someday after I get to Heaven, I’ll ask Jonah.”

The teacher was emphatic: “No! No! You can’t do that. Jonah’s not in Heaven.”

The girl said, “Oh well, then you ask him.”

The little girl was interested in the Bible and taking Christianity away from all public school kids (the nation’s greatest resource) robs them of a vital need during a vulnerable time in their lives. It’s like taking the bottle away from a new-born babe.

What are the results? “By their fruits shall ye know them.” Look at today’s news. There’s an unprecedented juvenile moral breakdown, ranging from unmarried teenage pregnancy to vicious crime. Recently, a boy, 13, killed a boy, 11, over a pack of cigarettes.

Once Christianity was respected and encouraged in public schools. It was the usual routine to bow our heads for a brief morning prayer. Now that’s illegal.

Recently a modern judge pronounced the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional because it mentions God.

Unlike school kids, our elected officials were able to respond. The pointed out that by modern standards the Constitution is unconstitutional. It also mentions God. Then a group of lawmakers assembled in a prominent public place and repeatedly pledged their allegiance. Their defiance and ridicule caused the judge to postpone any further action.

It was a strange and unnatural feeling to be proud of a group of politicians, but I was then.

Religious pressure shouldn’t exist in schools or anywhere else. Christianity, well presented, will excel without any special advantages. Atheists, cults, superstitions and foreign religions all have the right to be heard. But not every weirdo has the right to be taken seriously, and when any one of them can successfully demand that the nation’s established, accepted, proven religion be banned from public places, we have lost the freedom of religion.

Responsible people, especially parents and Christians, should mobilize — not for war — to state their convictions, exert their influence and take their essential places in our degenerated society. It might be surprising what could be accomplished. A poet said, after listening to a no-nonsense preacher: “His truth held forth with double sway and fools who came to scoff, remained to pray.”
