Rematch set for coroner (10/18/2008)

The 2008 race for Jay County Coroner is a rematch.

Democratic Incumbent Mark Barnett, who scored a solid victory in the 2004 election over Republican challenger Paulette Bonvillian Wagner, finds himself once again in a race against Wagner.

Wagner, who is an advanced emergency medical technician and deputy coroner, is a resident of 805 E. Walnut St., Portland.

The 54-year-old Wagner is a graduate of Redkey High School, Tri-State University and is trained as a medicolegal death investigator.

A mother of two adult sons, she is a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the church's Ladies Rosary Society.

She was appointed county coroner in 2003, and also ran for coroner in 2004.

Barnett, 54, lives at 2338 East 200 North, Portland along with wife Lisa. The couple has one daughter.

A member of the Portland Police Department in addition to his coroner duties, Barnett is a graduate of Jay County High School and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, and is also a certified medicolegal death investigator.

He is a member of the West Walnut Street Church of Christ, Indiana State Coroner's Association, American Legion Post 211 and American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators.

He served as coroner from 1993-2000 and 2005 to the present, and was also a member of the Jay County Council from 2001-2004.

The candidates recently submitted answers to a question from The Commercial Review.

1. Why are you running for coroner, and why do you believe you are the best candidate for the job?

Barnett: I like helping families find answers to their questions of how their loved one has died. I have 16 years of experience with the Jay County Coroner's office, with 12 of those years as coroner. I have a practice in my office to treat the families we are assisting with the same respect and professionalism that we would want shown to our families if we were in your situation. Over the years I have spent numerous hours of training in all aspects of death investigations, not to mention I was Jay County's first state certified medicolegal death investigator. Under my direction the Jay County Coroner's office was one of the first counties around to have all of the deputies, plus myself, certified.

I have 24 years' experience with the Portland Police Department, which has helped by knowing legal aspects and proper investigative techniques. I have four years experience on the Jay County Council, which has shown me how to oversee and conduct a proper budget.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask the voters to allow me to continue to put my experience to work for you as your Jay County Coroner.

Wagner: I believe my 18 years of experience and training in the medical field makes me a good candidate.[[In-content Ad]]
