DUNKIRK - Repairs for the city hall roof as well as the possibility of installing decorative lighting fixtures along Main Street were among the topics of discussion at Monday night's city council meeting here.
City officials opened three bids for the roof repair work. Bids were received from Fort Wayne Roofing and Sheet Metal ($18,600), McGuff Roofing, Muncie ($21,708) and Five-Star Commercial Roofing, Hartford City ($25,000).
Before awarding a contract, council members decided to table all the bids for further study and review. City attorney William Hinkle was not present at the council meeting, and they wanted to give him a chance to review all the bid documents.
On the topic of possibly installing decorative Gas Boom era street lighting fixtures along Main Street, Chuck Huffman suggested that the city might be able to qualify for a transportation enhancement grant in connection with the Ind. 167 highway improvement project.
The grant could total $70,000 to $80,000 with the city supplying a matching amount of about $14,500, Huffman explained. City officials were told they would also be responsible for the maintenance of these specialty lighting fixtures.
Also on the topic of the Ind. 167 improvement project, council members granted permission to allow the contractor, Brooks Construction of Fort Wayne, to store gravel and other materials on the old Boston Store lot in the downtown area. Councilman Tom Johnson said that special provisions of this agreement would require that items not be placed too close to the building next to the vacant Boston Store lot.
Brooks officials added that they anticipated having extra truckloads of dirt available as a result of the street improvement project which they could supply to any interested individuals or businesses.
In other business at Monday's meeting, council members:
•Reviewed a proposal for a water utility rate study from H. J. Umbaugh & Associates of Indianapolis. This study was suggested as part of the requirements for receiving a U.S Department of Agriculture Rural Development grant to make improvements at the water plant.
•Heard an update on the city's Ind. 167 water main relocation project which is nearing completion, according to city water department superintendent Dace Mumbower.
•Listened to local resident Zach Crouch criticize the condition of the city dog pound and point out the need for improvements.[[In-content Ad]]
