Repair shop gets green light from BZA (08/15/07)

Portland Board of Zoning Appeals

By By RACHELLE HAUGHN-

A repair shop for golf carts, all-terrain vehicles and motor vehicles may soon be opening in a former factory on Portland's southeast side.

Members of a local board approved a special exception request Tuesday, allowing a Portland man to open a repair business on South Wayne Street.

The request was granted with several stipulations - including that junk vehicles not be kept on the property.

Gerald Johnson plans to open his business at 518 S. Wayne St.

The property currently is zoned neighborhood business. A special exception must be granted for an automobile repair business to be operated in a neighborhood business area.

Portland Board of Zoning Appeals members Ron May, Larry Petro and Vicki Tague voted in favor of the request Thursday.

Board members Susan Schutz and Ken Walters did not attend the eight-minute meeting.

Board members approved four stipulations proposed by Bill Milligan, Jay/Portland Building and Planning administrator.

The stipulations say that only vehicles which have been repaired or are waiting to be fixed and are in good condition can be kept outside the building. No wrecked, junk or demolition derby vehicles, and no motor homes, campers boats or trailers can be kept outside.

Johnson agreed to the stipulations and said the owner of the building will prohibit him from storing vehicles outside.

Tague asked Johnson if he expected to repair any vehicles larger than a pick-up truck.

Johnson said the building's garage door is only 10 feet tall, so he couldn't fix anything larger than a truck.

Before the board voted, Milligan said he has not received any written or verbal complaints from nearby property owners. No one in the audience at Tuesday's meeting spoke against the request.[[In-content Ad]]
