Resident upset about outage

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

I am writing this letter by candlelight on Tuesday, Jan. 11, to air my complaint about the horrible response to us and many others in the residential areas of Portland by Indiana Michigan Power following the recent ice storm damage.

I was quite heartened to see power restored in most of our city by Friday evening. I, and I’m sure many other, expected that others could shortly expect power. To the contrary, however, it now seems that I&M has kept us in the dark in more ways than one.

In the four full days since, we have heard absolutely no specifics as to where I&M and others have been working to restore power, and there has been little or no evidence of crews working in Portland.

Despite Mayor Hosier’s repeated assurances that power crews were working hard to restore power, a few drives throughout the areas of our city awaiting power revealed exactly no crews at work that I could find.

Twice (on separate days) I could only find a single AEP pick-up truck with two individuals doing “assessments.” And this after we had been without power for five full days.

Quite frankly, I think I&M has ignored Portland’s residential areas at great expense and inconvenience to its citizens. I think they have lied to our mayor and caused him to falsly assure Portland residents of progress when very little, if any, was being made. Why couldn’t they have been honest with us and we could better have prevented substantial losses of food, flooded basements, etc.?

I refuse to believe that anyone in their positions would not know that Portland would not have power until a full week had passed and advise us of specifics of which areas would be delayed, and the reasons for the delay.

As I see it, I only wish that I had some other source of electric power, as I&M no longer merits my support and confidence. Oh well, maybe they will have patience with me if I’m a week late paying my next electric bill. Fat chance!

Somehow, I wish we could find some way as a community to let I&M know of our displeasure .. or am I the only one who feels this way?
