A request to rezone an approximately six acre lot on the city’s northwest side was supported Thursday by Portland Planning Commission members.

The commission unanimously recommended to rezone 6.43 acres to highway service from agricultural. The commission’s recommendation will go to Portland City Council for final approval.

The land, owned by Jacqueline Delauter, is located just north of Portland Forge Employees Federal Credit Union at 1102 W. Votaw St. and the future site of a 1,750-square-foot-building which will house Linsco/Private Ledger. At its September meeting, the commission rezoned the half-acre lot for Linsco/Private Ledger.

Also Thursday, the board unanimously approved rezoning an approximately one-acre lot at 026 South 300 West, owned by Deb Zweber. The land was previously zoned commercial and housed a television repair business.

This request also will go before city council for final approval. Zweber has no immediate plans to build on the lot, Jay/ Portland Building and Planning administrator Bill Milligan said following Thursday’s meeting.

In other business, commission members approved a recommendation to the Portland Board of Zoning Appeals for a variance for the former Standard Brush and Broom Factory, 415 W. Water St., Portland. A variance in use allows the building to be used for purposes other than industrial while not having to permanently rezone the area, Milligan said.

Commission member voted 8 to 1, with Jim Sanders voting in opposition.

“I’ll vote no because I’m not in favor of paintball,” Sanders said.

The building, owned by Glynn Barber, plans to used the building as a recreation center including retail, skateboarding and paintball area.

“I’d estimate that (Barber) has between $70,000 to $80,000 in this project. He is revamping the whole building and fixing the roof,” said Jay County Development Corporation executive director Robert Quadrozzi. “He is providing an area inside for young people to use year round.”

Quadrozzi also said that Barber was recently been approved by the Portland EDIT Committee for an loan to fund materials and labor costs to renovate the building. The amount of the loan has not been determined, he added this morning.[[In-content Ad]]
