One local school is welcoming a new boys basketball coach while another is saying good-bye to its girls coach.

The South Adams School Board unanimously approved the hire of new boys varsity basketball coach Jason Ridge at its meeting Tuesday evening. Also Tuesday, Fort Recovery’s Lynn Hughes resigned as coach of the Indians’ girls basketball team.

Ridge has spent the past nine seasons as an assistant coach at Columbia City High School, where he worked as the junior varsity head coach for the past three years. He replaces Cary Cogdell, who resigned after two years with the Starfires and is returning to Leo as an assistant coach.

“I’m excited,” the Wapahani High School graduate said following the meeting. “Right now I’m an Indiana basketball junkie living out his dream.”

Ridge will teach fourth grade at South Adams Elementary School in Berne. He will be introduced to the public as the new head coach Thursday evening in the South Adams Jr./Sr. High School cafeteria at 6 p.m.

Terms of his contract have not been negotiated.

Hughes chose to end her career with the Fort Recovery girls team after seven seasons, joining boys basketball coach Joe Bruns who also resigned this year. FRHS athletics director Barb Sautbine said Hughes cited family reasons were the biggest factor in her decision.

Bruns has since been replaced by Brian Patch.

Hughes went 77-71 with the Indians, finishing with a 6-15 campaign in 2002-2003. After three losing seasons to start her tenure, the team went 13-7 in 1999-2000 and won 18 games in each of the next two seasons.

Her deepest tournament run came in 2000-2001, when the Indians defeated then-No. 1 Marion Local in the district championship game. They went on to crush Russia in the regional semifinals before falling to Jackson Center 42-40 in the finals.

Hughes ranks second in school history in coaching wins behind Dianne McClung.

Fort Recovery is beginning the search for a new coach immediately, with the deadline for applications set at Friday, June 20. Resumes should be sent to: Barb Sautbine, Fort Recovery High School, 400 East Butler Street, Fort Recovery, Ohio.
