Rigby named all-conference
Collegiate Check-up
Tyler Rigby earned another honor, and his Red Wolves have taken the first step.
Rigby, a 2006 Jay County High School graduate, was named Wednesday to the All-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team. And he was also one of four players in double figures Tuesday as the Indiana University East men’s basketball team defeated Cincinnati Christian 91-68 in the opening game of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
The KIAC tournament champion will earn an automatic berth to the NAIA Division II national tournament.
In the tournament-opening win, Rigby scored 13 points for the second-seeded Red Wolves (22-8). He also had four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.
The senior, who is a three-time all-KIAC selection, tallied 24 points in each of his final two regular-season games — an 87-81 win Feb. 17 over Cincinnati Christian and a 101-96 triumph Saturday over top-seeded IU Southeast. He shot 9-of-17 and buried five 3-pointers while adding six rebounds and a steal against Cincinnati Christian, and had five boards, three blocks and a steal in the regular-season finale.
Rigby finished the season ranked 23rd in the nation in scoring at 18.9 points per game and 42nd in 3-pointers with 65.
The Red Wolves will play Berea College in the semifinal round of the KIAC tournament tonight at 7 p.m. at Earlham College. Fans can listen to the game at http://www.930whon.com.
Amanda Johnson
Jay County – 2008
Joined three Indiana Wesleyan University teammates in winning the National Christian College Athletic Association championship in the distance medley Saturday at the meet national indoor track meet hosted by IWU.
Johnson teamed with Cassidy Wagner, Alyssa Foss and Angi Wolgemuth in posting a winning time of 12 minutes, 38.46 seconds. They finished about two seconds ahead of the runner-up team from Trinity Christian.
The junior’s top individual finish at the meet came in the 800-meter run, in which she was a state medalist as a senior at JCHS, as she placed fourth in 2:24.33. She was 13th in the high jump at 4 feet, 9 inches.
Johnson, Kyla Morgan, Wagner and Wolgemuth posted a time of 4:10.82 for third place in the 4x400 relay.
Pazia Speed
Jay County – 2010
Earned an award and helped the Huntington University women’s basketball team to a 65-53 victory Saturday over Bethel in the first round of the Mid-Central Conference Tournament.
Speed was named to the MCC All-Freshman team after averaging averaged 6.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists this season. She has bumped her scoring average up to 11.0 since joining the starting lineup Feb. 5.
The freshman was one of four Foresters in double figures, finishing with 11 points. She also had five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Speed totaled eight points, seven rebounds and two assists in Huntington’s final regular-season game, a 75-57 victory over Saint Francis. The team is 19-10.
Josh Ludy
Jay County – 2008
Smacked a couple of doubles in the Baylor University baseball team’s 9-4 victory Saturday over Oral Roberts.
Starting at catcher and hitting in the clean-up slot, Ludy finished 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI for the Bears (2-2). He smacked an RBI double and scored a run in the first inning, and added a double and a run in the third.
The junior also went 2-for-5 with two RBIs Sunday in a 5-4 victory over Oral Roberts, and also walked Tuesday in a 2-0 loss to Texas Christian.
Brandon Reynard
Jay County – 2009
Posted a fifth-place finish Saturday for the Indiana Tech men’s track team at the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Championships.
Reynard’s best finish came with a time of 50.96 in the 400-meter dash for fifth place. He was also 13th in the 60 hurdles in 9.27.
Greg Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2010
Scored seven points for the University of Findlay men’s basketball team Saturday in an 84-66 loss to Ferris State.
Kahlig also had one rebound and one assist in 16 minutes off the bench. The Oilers 21-3 with two regular-season games remaining.
Daniel Bollenbacher
South Adams – 2008
Tossed two innings of relief Wednesday for the Lincoln Memorial Unviersity baseball team in its 18-2 drubbing of Kentucky State.
Bollenbacher entered the game with his team leading 7-0 in the third inning and struck out three batters in his two frames. He gave up one run on three hits.
The junior also allowed one unearned run on a hit and a walk in 1 1/3 innings of work Saturday, suffering the loss as the Railsplitters fall 9-8 to Catawba.
Joanna Snyder
Fort Recovery – 2009
Helped the Ohio Northern University women’s basketball team to a 75-68 victory Tuesday over Muskingum.
Snyder hit her only 3-point attempt and finished with six points as the Polar Bears improved to 17-9. She added four rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
The sophomore also had three points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals Saturday in a 67-64 loss to Baldwin-Wallace.
Dexter Shreve
Jay County – 2009
Turned in a ninth-place finish Saturday as the Kent State University men’s track team hosted the Kent State Tune-Up.
Shreve cleared the bar at 14 feet, 7 ½ inches, losing a tie-breaker for eighth place with Zach Ferrara of Brockport State.
Chase Ingle
South Adams – 2010
Dropped both of his matches Feb. 13 for the Hanover College men’s tennis team in a 9-0 loss to Rose-Hulman.
Ingle lost in the No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-0 to Seth Hendrickson. He teamed with Derek Zimmers at No. 3 doubles and suffered an 8-0 loss to Devon Fritz and Alex Gumz.[[In-content Ad]]
