Rigby ranks 7th in nation

A Jay County High School graduate is one of the nation’s leading scorers.
Tyler Rigby, who graduated from JCHS in 2006, ranks seventh in scoring so far this season in NAIA Division II. He posted 19 points in the latest victory for the Indiana University – East men’s basketball team, an 88-73 victory Saturday over Calumet College of St. Joseph.
Rigby shot 7-of-15 as the Red Wolves improved to 8-1, and also had two rebounds, two assists and two blocks. He also had 19 points, eight boards, one assist and one steal Saturday as his team suffered its first loss of the season 85-82 to Huntington (7-0).
The senior hit his career high for the second time this season Nov. 12, when he poured in 36 points as IU-East defeated Purdue North Central. He went 14-of-16 at the foul line and hit 4-of-6 3-pointers while adding eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
A day later he hit four more 3-pointers and turned in a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in a victory over Purdue Calumet. And on Nov. 16 he totaled 27 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal as the Red Wolves beat Wittenberg 90-84.
Rigby, who is IU-East’s all-time leading scorer, is averaging 25 points per game. He is just two points behind NAIA Division II scoring leader Jazzmarr Ferguson of IU-Southeast.
He is also averaging 6.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.6 bocks per contest.
Amanda Johnson
Jay County – 2008
Helped the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s cross country team to a ninth-place finish Saturday at the NAIA National Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, Wash.
Johnson was the No. 6 runner for the Wildcats, who entered the meet ranked 11th in the nation. She turned in a time of 19 minutes, 56 seconds to finish 130th in a field of 225 runners.
The junior earned All-Mid-Central Conference honors this season.
Tiff Gaerke
Fort Recovery – 2007
Was a key player on defense for the University of Dayton women’s volleyball team as it won its second straight Atlantic 10 title Sunday with a 25-21, 25-12, 25-15 win over Xavier.
Gaerke played in all three games for the NCAA Division I No. 12 Flyers, who are 26-3 on the year and have won 23 straight. She also had two assists.
The senior totaled three digs and two assists in Dayton’s semifinal win over Duquesne.
The Flyers will open NCAA tournament play against Ohio Friday at 7 p.m.
Cori Vormohr
Jay County – 2008
Turned in a sixth-place finish for the Ball State University women’s swim team Saturday as it hosted and won the five-team Doug Coers Invitational.
Vormohr’s best effort came in the 200-yard breaststroke, in which the Cardinals took three of the top six spots. She turned in a time of 2:32.48 to take sixth place.
The junior was also seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.71. She added a 16th-place finish at 25.81 in the 50 freestyle.
Greg Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2010
Scored eight points Friday for the Findlay University men’s basketball team, which hosted the Findlay Tip-Off Classic.
Kahlig hit all of his four free-throws in the tournament-opening victory for the NCAA Division II No. 3 Oilers (4-0) over Ohio Valley. He also had five rebounds, three steals and an assist.
The freshman followed with seven points and two rebounds Saturday as Findlay defeated St. Joseph’s 71-54 in the tournament championship game.
Joanna Snyder
Fort Recovery – 2009
Posted six points in each of the first two games of the season for the Ohio Northern University women’s basketball team.
Snyder started the season Friday, going 2-of-2 from the field and 2-of-3 for the line for six points in a 66-58 win over Transylvania. She also had two rebounds and two steals.
The sophomore, who is in ONU’s starting lineup, added six points, two rebounds and two assists in Saturday’s 80-71 loss to Hanover.
Pazia Speed

Helped the Huntington University women’s basketball team overcome its first loss of the season, scoring five points Saturday in the Foresters’ 77-46 victory over Trinity Christian in the Huntington University Classic.
Speed hit one field goal and was 3-of-4 from the line in the win over Trinity. She grabbed five rebounds, and had three assists and a steal.
