Road extension request repeated (2/3/04)
Couple wants 1000 West extended
A second request to extend a Knox Township dead-end road didn’t draw any definitive response from Jay County Commissioners.
David and Sheri Finnerty, who own property in section 15 of Knox Township between Division Road and Ind. 26, asked the commissioners Monday for the second time whether they would consider extending county road 1000 West to the edge of their property, where they plan to build a home in a woods.
The road currently dead-ends about one-third of a mile north of Division Road.
The Finnertys said they could find no concrete evidence that the road existed all the way between Ind. 26 and Division Road, with the exception of a map from Jay County REMC.
Barring proof that the road right-of-way actually existed, the only way to improve the road would be a petition requesting that a road be created, commissioners’ attorney Brad Burkett said Monday.
Improving the road from where it currently ends for about 1,000 feet north to the Finnertys’ property line would allow the couple to spend less on driveway construction versus bringing the drive in from Ind. 26.
“We’re trying to eliminate four-tenths of a mile (of driveway),” Sheri Finnerty said.
“I understand why you’re doing it,” Commissioner Milo Miller Jr. said.
Commissioner Gary Theurer said he would not vote to improve any additional stretches of county road 1000 West without conclusive proof the road legally existed.
Also Monday, Jay County Courthouse superintendent Roger McBride told the commissioners that the courthouse elevator would be closed for repairs Thursday, Feb. 26 and Friday, Feb. 27.[[In-content Ad]]
