Road funds may have been wasted (08/23/2008)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

While reading the Aug. 19 edition of The Commercial Review, I came across the article discussing costs of roadwork performed in Jay County as it relates to chip-and-seal work and general material costs.

County road 375 West was chip-and-sealed earlier this year. as were other roads in the area. I questioned the practice in whole and in part with the county highway department superintendent over the phone based on the fact that the roads weren't in a true state of disrepair (i.e. holes, ruts, major cracks, etc.)

His response was the roads are on a maintenance schedule. This is all based on the fact that all roads are on a schedule as to when they should be repaired or paved. I mentioned (in using some common sense) that if the roads aren't broke, don't fix them - based on cost savings.

After they sit there and spend good money after the fact and whine about why they don't and can't do more road repairs is because they blow taxpayer funds foolishly, but you can't get that through the heads of local government and department heads. There is no comprehension there to a common sense statement.

I personally can't see mine or anybody else's taxes being raised just to compensate for unabated ignorance, which seems to run rampant in the county anyways from a government standpoint as well as the Jay School Corporation point of view.

It's the people's funds they're wasting; wake up please.

This message approved for the committee of common sense.

Sincerely,

Steven Blowers
