Roessner is next Tribe girls coach (06/28/03)
FORT RECOVERY — A former Fort Recovery varsity boys basketball coach will take over the girls program, if the school board grants its approval.
Jeff Roessner, who coach the Indian boys for nearly three seasons in the early 1990s, has been selected as the Tribe’s next coach. He was chosen from a group of four interviewees by the committee of athletics director Barb Sautbine, principal Ed Snyder, superintendant Pat Niekamp and a representative of the booster club.
The school board will vote on the recommendation at a special meeting Monday.
“Jeff’s commitment, discipline, character, work ethic, knowledge and passion for the game are qualities that made him a qualified person for this position,” said Sautbine in a press release today.
“He has had many positive experiences working with girls basketball,” added Snyder in a phone interview this morning. “He has a real passion for the game and a real vision for what the program will be like to be successful.”
Roessner could not be reached for comment this morning.
He takes over for Lynn Hughes, who coached for seven years with the Indians before resigning earlier this month. Hughes was 77-71 during her career at Fort Recovery, and finished with a 6-15 record last year.
Roessner, a Fort Recovery resident, was the boys coach beginning in 1991. He coached for two full seasons, and left the team before the completion of the 1993-94 campaign.
In his two full years, Roessner compiled a 34-11 record, winning Midwest Athletic Conference and sectional championships in 1993. The Indians were the district runners-up that year.
They went 11-13 in and were sectional champs and district runners-up again in the 1993-94 season.
He was also the girls JV coach from 1985-1990 and the JV boys coach for one season before taking over the varsity program.
“The committee felt he was the most qualfied for the position,” said Snyder, noting his overall basketball knowledge and enthusiasm. “We welcome him aboard and wish him the best. We hope he can continue a fine tradition of girls basketball.”
Roessner’s daughter, Vicki, will be a freshman in the Fort Recovery program this year. She played point guard for the 16-1 eighth grade girls team last season.[[In-content Ad]]
