Roessner, Miller lead runners at Celina (08/25/2008)

JCHS/FRHS cross country

CELINA, Ohio - Both area girls teams turned in solid showings at Saturday's opening race of the season. Both boys teams struggled.

Tina Roessner was the runner-up in the Division II/III race at the Celina Rotary Invitational, leading the Fort Recovery High School girls team to a fourth-place finish. Aly Miller placed third in the Division I race as the Jay County girls team took third overall.

The JCHS boys were eighth out of nine teams in Division I, and the Fort Recovery boys placed 11th out of 14 in the Division II/III field.

Winning teams were Fort Loramie (Division II/III girls), East Noble (Division I girls), Findlay (Division I boys) and Bellefontaine (Division II/III boys.

Roessner turned in the best girls time for either area team, taking second in the 12-team Division II/III race in 21-minutes, 21 seconds. Only Fort Loramie's Janel Olberding was faster in 20:57.

Miller led Jay County's girls in the race at Wright State University's Lake Campus with a third-place time of 21:31.

Sophomore Leah Wellman gave the Patriots another runner in the top five as she took fifth in 21:57. Leah's sister, senior Kylie Wellman, was 11th in 22:53.

Freshman Katie Simmons placed 21st at 23:58, and senior Cassie Laux rounded out the team score in 24th at 24:01.

More than two minutes separated Roessner and the No. 2 Tribe runner, sophomore Alexis Sutter, who was 23rd in 23:33. Abby Huelskamp was 32nd in 24:08, followed by Nicole Heitkamp in 40th at 24:20 and Amber Heitkamp in 52nd with a time of 24:48.

Ryan Heitkamp turned in the best overall boys time for the two schools, placing 19th for Fort Recovery in 19:08. Tevan Nichols paced the JCHS boys in 40th at 20:05.

Also for the Indians, Caleb Heitkamp was 60th in 20:37 followed by Mathias Koester (87th - 21:50), Zach Guggenbiller 911th - 23:26) and Aaron Wills (134th - 25:49).

Freshman Austin Bentz was second for the Patriots in 51st place overall at 21:10. Branden Brinton finished 74th in 22:13, Spencer Grady was 91st at 24:16 and Zach Johnson took 108th in 27:14.

Junior high

Fort Recovery's boys posted a runner-up effort with 59 points, finishing behind Findlay (43) and well ahead of third-place Holy Rosary (107) in the nine-team field.

The Tribe girls were sixth out of 11 teams with 159 points. Fort Loramie won at 75.

Josh Pohl was the runner-up for the Indians, fighting off Alex Mielke of Holy Rosary by three seconds at the finish line in 12:22. FRMS had three runners in the top 10 as Derek Sutter took eighth in 12:52 and Nathan Fullenkamp was one second back in ninth. Marshall Hull placed 26th in 13:51, and Holden Heitkamp rounded out the team score in 33rd at 14:16.

Fort Recovery's girls had two runners in the top 10 with Samantha Tobe ninth and Abby May 10th in identical times of 14:49.

Jessica Vogel and Elle Sutter also went back-to-back in 15:57 and 15:58 for 33rd and 34th places respectively. Hannah Bihn was 100th at 18:40.[[In-content Ad]]
