FORT RECOVERY — Vicki Roessner posted the two best finishes for Fort Recovery as it hosted the second day of the Midwest Athletic Conference Championships Friday.
Roessner was fifth in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, earning eight points as the Indians finished in a tie with New Knoxville for eighth place with a total of 29. The boys team got a pair of seventh-place finishes to lift its total to eight, but still had one point fewer than New Knoxville to place 10th.
Versailles won both the girls and boys competitions with 141 and 117 points respectively.
Roessner improved on her seed after Tuesday’s preliminary round, in which she placed sixth in the 100 hurdles. In the finals she surpassed Minster’s Erin Keiser and had the lead on Sara Sharp of New Bremen for fourth place before clipping the second-to-last hurdle.
The battle for fourth was still a near dead heat with Roessner coming up just hundredths short to place fifth in 17.96 seconds. Sharp finished in 17.93.
The sophomore just missed moving up a spot in the 300 hurdles after placing fifth in the preliminaries. She held her position, crossing the line just eight hundredths behind Meghan Mestemaker of Versailles in 50.92.
Roessner’s two fifth-place finishes gave the Tribe eight of their 29 points. Twenty of the remaining 21 were scored by Holly Stein Tuesday as she broke her own school discus record to finish first and also took the shot put title.
Shawn Stein had the top individual finish for Fort Recovery’s boys team Friday night, placing seventh in the 400 dash in 57.66. Eric Lamm was the only other Indian to score in an individual race, placing eighth in the 800 run in 2:11.70.
Stein and Lamm also teamed with Stan Roessner and Matt Vagedes for seventh in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3-minutes, 45.28 seconds.
The finals of the MAC Junior High Championships were held Thursday night, with Anne Koesters pacing the Indians. She had a couple of top-three finishes as the girls team placed eighth with 35 points. The boys team was fifth with five points.
Versailles won the girls title with a total of 120, and Minster took the boys crown with 1291/3.
Koesters did her damage in the throwing events, narrowly missing the conference title in the shot put. Her top toss was just one inch shorter than that of Christine Borchers of Versailles as it landed at 31 feet, eight inches.
She also placed third in the discus with a toss of 84 feet, seven inches.
Jordan Hess notched the top finish for the boys team. He took sixth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at eight feet, six inches.[[In-content Ad]]
