Roessner wins 3,200 championship

FRHS track

MINSTER, Ohio - Tina Roessner left no doubt.

The Fort Recovery High School senior was unquestionably the best 3,200-meter runner at the district meet as she dominated the field Saturday. Her championship effort led the Tribe girls track team to a seventh-place finish out of 16 teams at the Division III meet hosted by Minster.

The Indians scored 49 points to finish 4.5 behind St. John's and one ahead of Lima Central Catholic.

Fort Recovery's boys managed just one-third of a point, placing last.

Minster won the girls title with 132 points, and New Bremen took the boys championship with 145.

Roessner, a senior, was the top performer for FRHS, rolling to victory in the 3,200 run. She finished first by nearly 20 seconds and was one of just two runners to break the 13-minute mark with her winning time of 12-minutes, 16.82 seconds.

She trailed a pair of Minster runners in the 1,600 run, placing third in 5:39.99.

Roessner will compete in both events at the Troy regional, which begins Wednesday at 4 p.m. and continues Friday at 4 p.m. The top four competitors in each event earned a regional berth.

Holly Brunswick was the only other Indian to earn a regional berth. She cleared the high jump bar at 5 feet event, winning the tiebreaker over Danielle Taflinger of Lima Central to take fourth place.

She is in a three-way tie for the No. 8 seed in the regional meet. The top three regional finishers advance to the state finals.

Brunswick just missed regional berths in two other events.

In the 100 hurdles, Taflinger returned the favor by edging Brunswick for fourth place by just 5 hundredths of a second. Brunswick placed fifth in 16.87.

The sophomore was nearly as close in the long jump as she finished less than four inches from a regional berth. She had a jump of 15 feet, 3 ¾ inches while Parkway's Marian Bevington was fourth in 15 feet, 7 ½ inches.

Three other Indians also turned in fifth-place finishes.

Kylie Kahlig came less than 6 inches from a trip to the regional meet with her throw of 33 feet 3 ½ inches. Alexis Sutter was behind Roessner in the 1,600 run in 6:03.25, and Nicole Heitkamp also ran behind Roessner in the 3,200 in 13:22.15.

Abby Huelskamp posted a time of 2:36.3 to place sixth in the 800 run, and Barbie Link tossed the shot put 32 feet, 7 ¾ inches for seventh place.

Fort Recovery was also sixth in the 4x800 relay in 11:10.3.

Shane Stein scored the only points for the Tribe boys. He finished in a three-way tie for eighth place in the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches.[[In-content Ad]]
