By By JENNIFER TARTER-
The power of parenthood is coming to Portland.
Nationally recognized speaker and author John Rosemond will present his program, "Assuming the Power of Parenthood" Thursday.
This free event sponsored by Judge Haynes Elementary School, will be held at 6 p.m. in the East Jay Middle School cafeteria.
The program is funded through a Comprehensive School Reform grant Judge Haynes received from the Indiana Department of Education in the fall of 2005.
"Part of the grant includes (funds for) character development and a speaker on parental involvement," Judge Haynes principal Trent Paxson said Friday.
Rosemond was recommended by school corporation officials who had attended one of his programs at an area school several years ago.
"They were very pleased with his presentation and his message," Paxson said, adding that he is also familiar with Rosemond's columns and books.
Rosemond, a husband, father, grandfather, author, psychologist and expert on parenting, has given more than 200 presentations across the nation to parents, teachers and professional groups.
He has written nine books on teenagers, the terrible twos, spanking children, homework and several other topics associated with raising children. His nationally syndicated column appears in more than 175 newspapers. He is also a featured columnist in Sign of the Times and Hemispheres magazines and his magazine Traditional Parent is available internationally.
With a background in psychology, he worked as a psychologist in Illinois and North Carolina and directed several mental health programs for children and worked in a private practice as a family psychologist at the Carolinas Medical Center Department of Pediatrics and Family Practice in North Carolina from 1980 to 1990. Since then, he has spent most of his time public speaking and writing.[[In-content Ad]]
