Roughia leads Jay runners (02/14/2009)

Collegiate Check-up

Jill Roughia led a group of three former Patriots who competed Feb. 7 at the Taylor Indoor Invitational.

Roughia, a 2005 Jay County High School graduate, won her lone individual event for the Huntington University women's track team. Amanda Johnson (2008) helped an Indiana Wesleyan University relay team to victory, and Alyssa Johnson (2006) of the host Trojans turned in a third-place finish.

The victory for Roughia came in the 1,000-meter run, in which she barely edged Janelle Pierce of Indiana Wesleyan at the finish line. She recorded a time of 3-minutes, 13.64 seconds to win by 0.21 seconds.

Amanda Johnson's win came with teammates Cassidy Wagner, Heidi Forgeng and Laura Dziagwa in the 4x800 relay. They teamed for a time of 9:43.74 to win by nearly 11 seconds.

In the 4x400 relay Amanda Johnson, a freshman, joined Angi Wolgemuth, Laura Bowman and Katelin Morgan for a runner-up time of 4:09.47.

Roughia, a senior, and her teammates Josann Schoeff, Michelle Kyler and Bethany McGraw finished two places behind Johnson's group in the 4x400 relay in 4:19.12. She was also named Huntington's Athlete of the Week.

Alyssa Johnson, Amanda's junior sister, also ran in the 4x400 relay, teaming with Amy Malinowski, Kayce Swofford and Meghan Young for seventh at 4:36.03.

In the mile run, Alyssa Johnson placed third for Taylor in 5:35.98.

Tyler Rigby

Jay County - 2006

Led the IU-East men's basketball team to its 21st win of the season Wednesday by a 91-64 score over Temple Baptist.

Rigby racked up 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. He also grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists.

He also shot better than 50 percent from the field Feb. 6 as the Red Wolves defeated St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He finished with 11 points, two assists, two steals and a rebound against the Eutectics.

Dustin Overton

Jay County - 2004

Trailed Rigby with nine points in IU-East's victory over St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

Overton shot 4-of-6 from the field in the Red Wolves' 20th win of the season while totaling eight rebounds, one assist and one block. The junior added four points, three boards and one assists in IU-East's victory over Temple Baptist.

Sarah Mescher

Jay County - 2008

Helped the Anderson University women's track team's 4x200-meter relay to a runner-up finish Feb. 7 at the AU Indoor Invitational.

Mescher joined Rena St. Clair, Kate McCollum and Michelle Roth to finish second in the 4x200 race in 1-minute, 54.62 seconds. Her top individual finish was a third-place effort in the 200 dash in 29.13.

The freshman was also fourth in the 55 dash with a time of 8.15.

Holly Stein

Fort Recovery - 2007

Was the No. 2 scorer for the Defiance College women's basketball team Wednesday in a 80-67 victory over College of Mount St. Joseph.

Stein started and scored 14 points for the Yellow Jackets while added seven rebounds, four assists and a steal. The sophomore also had five points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal Feb. 7 as Defiance fell 75-62 to Anderson.

Mitchell Thomas

Jay County - 2005

Raced for the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's track team Feb. 6 at the Tiger Invitational hosted by DePauw.

Ian Thomas was the second-fastest Engineer in the 3,000-meter run. He placed seventh with a time of 9:11.03.

Mitchell Thomas, Ian's twin brother, followed with a time of 9:31.72 to finished 20th in the field of 37 runners.[[In-content Ad]]
