Roughia wins, Johnson 5th (02/16/08)

Collegiate Check-up

Jill Roughia won her lone individual event and former Patriot teammate Alyssa Johnson added a top-five effort as they both competed Feb. 2 in the Taylor Indoor Invitaitonal.

Roughia, a 2005 Jay County High School graduate, held off a trio of contenders to take first place for the Huntington University women's track team in the 1,000-meter run in 3-minutes, 11.64 seconds. Rachel Ham of Siena Heights, Janelle Pierce of Indiana Wesleyan and Hillary Halfman of Spring Arbor each finished less than two seconds off the pace.

Johnson, who graduated from JCHS in 2006, competed in the mile run for the host Trojans. She was fifth in the race at 5:37.11.

In the distance medley, Johnson joined Tabitha Bogue, a Winchester graduate, Vanessa Fereshetian and Becky Hegelein for third place at 14:13.35.

Roughia was a member of Huntington's 4x400 relay team, which placed sixth in 4:23.61.

Holly Stein

Fort Recovery - 2007

Turned in back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts for the Defiance College women's basketball team.

Stein, who averages 10.1 points per game, scored 12 Feb. 9 in a loss to Rose-Hulman and added 15 Wednesday against Manchester. She also had eight points apiece Feb. 2 against Mount St. Joseph and Feb. 6 against Taylor (Fort Wayne).

Stein added seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in the loss to Manchester. She also had five boards against Mount St. Joseph and three assists versus Taylor.

Tyler Niekamp

Fort Recovery - 2003

Scored eight points as the NCAA Division II No. 7 Findlay University men's basketball team extended its winning streak to nine games.

Niekamp shot 3-of-5 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range Thursday for his eight points Thursday in a 75-54 win over Mercyhurst. He also had three rebound s and a pair of assists.

The fifth-year senior also had eight points Feb. 7 in a win over Saginaw Valley State, four versus Northwood Feb. 9 and two against Ferris State Feb. 2. He had two assists against Northwood and two boards apiece in the victories over Saginaw Valley State and Ferris State.

Scott Bruggeman

Jay County - 2007

Helped Goshen College upset NAIA Division II No. 14 Grace College 81-78 Wednesday night.

Bruggeman completed a 3-of-4 effort at the line to help seal the game after Grace had cut its deficit to 79-78. He had three rebounds and two assists to go along with his three points.

The freshman also had five points, three assists and two rebounds in a loss Feb. 9 against Bethel College. He had nine points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist versus University of Saint Francis on Feb. 6, and totaled four points three assists, two steals and two rebounds Feb. 2 against Spring Arbor.

Mitchell Thomas

Jay County - 2005

Ian Thomas scored a fourth-place effort in the 3,000-meter run Feb. 9 for the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's track team at the Wabash Open Indoor Inviational. He finished in 9-minutes, 12.57 seconds.

Mitchell, Ian's twin brother, placed 15th in the mile at 4:44.27.

Suffered a 16-0 technical fall at 194 pounds against Anderson's Ronald Lofton in the Carson-Newman wrestling team's 41-11 victory Feb. 5.[[In-content Ad]]
