SA budget $11.1 million (8/20/03)

BERNE — The South Adams School Board held a public hearing for the 2004 budget during its meeting Tuesday, and after only a few public comments and questions, the $11.1 million budget is poised for adoption at the board’s next meeting.

South Adams Supt. Connie Bailey characterized all the budget estimates as “safe” because of the state’s inconsistency with making payments to schools on time and in the full amount promised. The corporation plans to purchase one bus in 2004 and prepare to collect for another during that school year.

The $11.1 million is broken into the various funds as follows: $8,636,910 in the general fund; $450,370 in debt service; $1,015,429 in capital projects; $898,190 in the transportation fund; $70,000 in the bus replacement fund; and $46,200 in special education preschool fund.

The budget was advertised on Aug. 6 and again on Aug. 13 in the Berne Tri-Weekly and the Decatur Daily Democrat and was prepared on 85 percent of assessed valuation.

Bailey said the projected revenue for the budget is low, and the corporation estimates a loss of 24 students in enrollment.

There is an increase of $119,000 in the general fund compared to last year due to incremental increases in teacher pay and an increase in the amount the corporation has to pay in benefits.

In other action Tuesday, the board:

•Approved the South Adams Middle School handbook.

•Unanimously approved a resolution “for the employer participation in the pick-up of additional employee contributions.” This resolution allows teachers to contribute more of their own money into the Teacher Retirement Fund. The only responsibility the corporation has in the resolution is working with the extra paperwork and filing money and forms with TRF.

•Approved the following employee hires: Teresa Brown, head cook, South Adams High School; Kelly Moser, 1/3 contract to teach physical education, SAHS; Clint Tumbleson and Brad Tumbleson, volunteer varsity football coaches; Doug Beal, junior varsity girls basketball coach; Heather Rowlins, seventh grade volleyball coach; and Cindy Miller, cook, South Adams Elementary School.[[In-content Ad]]
